Two on a Tower by Thomas Hardy was my most recent read. It ends badly .... I knew it was going to end badly ... just no idea how badly. The language was lovely and romantic and the story wended its way through the countryside of England in the 1800's under beautfiul night skies. There was love and secrecy and sacrifice and it was lovely. I began to get seriously frustrated about 50 pages from the end but having decided I had figured it out and trying to withhold my vexation I got to the last page and a half .... and then .... OH MY GOSH!... I finished and threw the book down in complete exasperation.
